Movement Festival 2024 Review

In summarization, the experience of Movement 2024 was the feeling of being young. Dancing like there is no eyes on you in a sea of 1000s of attendees, Drinking like the morning isn’t approaching, watching your favorite DJs put on unworldly sets, and being engulfed in the heart of Downtown Detroit by skyscrapers and the view of the water. With hundreds of performers and nights that never end with after parties going until the next day’s sets begin if you’ve ever wondered what you could do to experience youth this was a festival that had the ability to do it.
The standout performances of the weekend have to go to Stacey Pullen a Detroit native with decades in the techno industry, DJ Holographic the funk machine herself, Dom Dolla coming off of a historic Coachella performance, Italian DJ, Adiel who is known for her hypnotic music and boiler room performance and Ludacris the man of many of many talents ranging from starring in one of the biggest action franchises in the world to being one of the biggest and most influential rappers of all time. Sadly Day 2 was rained out missing out on highly anticipated sets from Avalon Emerson, Nicole Moudabar and Sama’ abdulhadi, Ellen alien and a few others.
Despite the weather conditions shortening the weekend, this festival featured everything that a person needs for a great time from a variety of cultural cuisines, decently priced drinks that’ll make your night memorable the scenery out of a coming-of-age film, and unforgettable performance from the best of the best.
TECHNO, EDMN, RAP. EVEN WITH IT’S IMPERFECTIONS, THIS FESTIVAL IS WELL WORTH PUTTING IT IN YOUR SCHEDULE FOR 2025
Melanie Martinez Trilogy Tour Review

Melanie Martinez brought her Trilogy Tour to Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado on May 20th, 2024, alongside her openers, Men I Trust and Beach Bunny. Beach Bunny started the night off strong with over half the arena already seated and singing along. They took the stage for about 8 songs, most of which the crowd was already familiar with! Men I Trust shortly followed with their 10-song set, starting with their hit, “Show Me How.” Their slower, chill vibe sated the audience’s excitement before Melanie hit the stage.

The tour consists of Melanie’s three eras, Cry Baby, K-12, and Portals, giving the audience a full two-hour set. the show began with the Cry Baby era. Throughout the era Melanie had heart-shaped balloons as well as bubbles circling the arena. Her backup dancers were introduced with the first song and they did NOT disappoint. She also had a series of inflatable props that switched out between songs, including candles for “Pity Party.” I will say with the number of visuals she has as well as the symmetry of the stage and dancers, the center of the arena has the best view of her set, however, the screens adjacent to the stage made up for it and make the show look good from various angles.
When switching to the K-12 era, Melanie not only changed the songs, props, and stage design but both she and her backup dancers changed outfits. She played a well-crafted set with an even amount of songs solo vs. songs with her dancers, who seemed to play the roles of her peers. The nice balance made for opportunities for more intimate moments with her audience. The K-12 section ended with Melanie being shot with an arrow and “killed,” then being lowered below the stage.
After her interlude, she came to the Portals era, starting off with her song “DEATH” containing the lyrics “I’m back from the dead,” and I LOVED this transition. She, of course, had another outfit change and wore the faerie costume. The artistry in Portals is what makes it my favorite Melanie Martinez album. She included more effects in the final section by adding smoke on the stage and pyro and ending the show with butterfly confetti.
All of the eras had their own quirks making them a memorable part of the night. Cry baby and K-12 had those nostalgic elements to make you feel like a kid again, and Portals just felt like a work of art, making it unique and creative. This is definitely a show you do not want to miss.

Trophy Eyes Continues US Tour in Los Angeles

Article written by and photos by Natalie Ryan
Australian punk rock band Trophy Eyes stopped by Teragram Ballroom with support from House & Home and Rarity in Los Angeles on May 16th, over halfway through their tour. From Richmond, VA, alternative rock band House & Home got the crowd moving to start off the night. Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, post-hardcore band Rarity kept the good energy going onstage. With their third studio album released in June, the Canadian band has been steadily making a name for themselves in the scene. Toward the end of their set, they played “Worn Down” and “Exhale” acoustic, with many fans in the audience singing every word of the emotional songs.
All the way from Newcastle, Australia, Trophy Eyes was formed in 2013 and consists of vocalist John Floreani, bassist and backing vocalist Jeremy Winchester, lead guitarist Josh Campiao, and drummer Blake Caruso. When it was time for Trophy Eyes to start their set, they ran out and immediately jumped into “Blue Eyed Boy”, a track off their 2023 album “Suicide and Sunshine”. John Floreani brought out his dance moves whenever he wasn’t singing and the crowd jumped around and sang with him. While Floreani did not stage dive, which he is known to do, there were about five people that crowd surfed and subsequently stage-dived during the entire show.
At the Buffalo, New York stop earlier in the tour, a 24-year-old suffered a spinal cord injury when Floreani dove from the stage into the crowd, ending the show early to ride with her to the hospital. Bird Piché, a longtime fan, is currently in rehab and is expected to make a full recovery. This accident caused unnecessary discourse about crowd surfing and hate towards Trophy Eyes and specifically Floreani, especially due to many major news and media outlets picking up the story. All that really matters is supporting Bird in her recovery and ensuring that as concert-goers, we are participating in a crowd that is willing and prepared to hold up crowd surfers and do our best to protect anyone who may need it. Bird’s GoFundMe can be found here.
About halfway through the show, Floreani took a moment to ask everyone to withhold surfing or coming on the stage for the rest of the night. There was an attendee who kept trying to get on stage and jump into the crowd while acting drunk and belligerent, leaving Floreani and other members to struggle to make him use the stage exit in the middle of a song without any help from venue security. Floreani went back to his mic and urgently asked if there was any security or anyone to help them, and security finally started moving and dragged the disruptive person away.
Floreani thanked everyone else profusely for coming and said that the band is having a rough time, but it meant everything that so many people still came to their show. He talked about how “Suicide and Sunshine” didn’t reach as well on social media as it could’ve because of the word “suicide” being in the title. Before playing “Life in Slow Motion”, a dissociative song about the beauty and chaos of life, with the throughline of everything being temporary, he said that the song is representative of how he feels currently. The rest of the show went on without interruption, ending with popular songs “Chlorine”, “You Can Count on Me”, and finally “Bandaid”. The majority of the crowd was loving it, although some people seemed to be very drunk and/or feeling faint. After the band had finished, thanked everyone again, and handed out setlists and other memorabilia, Floreani came back to the mic. He was clearly angry and upset for what had transpired throughout the night and called out the venue for over-serving drinks and allowing people to get too drunk and causing problems, then barely helping when the band was struggling on stage. On that note, the show was over.
I have been a fan of Trophy Eyes for almost ten years, and I will keep recommending their music and going to see them. That being said, I don’t think I would recommend this venue, and it was unfortunate for everyone that they ended up playing there. I have a lot of respect for the band for pushing through everything and still playing a great show despite the circumstances.

Celebrating 25 Years of Kilby Court

Celebrating a quarter-century of musical excellence, Kilby Block Party's 5th year was a monumental tribute to the legacy of 25 years of Kilby Court and its illustrious alumni. From the likes of Mac Miller to this year's headliners Vampire Weekend and LCD Soundsystem, the festival has been a national hub for musical talent. This year's installment marked a significant milestone, boasting its largest footprint yet with four stages sprawling across the local Utah State Fair Park grounds, a testament to its growth and enduring influence.
Day one kicked off with a bang, as local act Drusky set the stage for a day filled with eclectic performances. Gustaf delivered a surprisingly dynamic set, while Hemlocke Springs captivated the crowd, redeeming herself most beautifully. The highlight of the evening came when headliners Vampire Weekend invited an audience member on stage to play Connect with them, exemplifying the festival's ethos of inclusivity and community. Thanks to Celsius, one of the official sponsors, attendees stayed refreshed and energized with the help of free drinks. By the end of the weekend, I started enjoying Celcius even more than before, most likely due to the environment of the amazing music and good vibes.
On day two, the energy was palpable as local band Boyfriend Sushi Town took the stage, setting the tone for a day filled with unforgettable moments. The Garden seriously ignited the crowd with its infectious energy, as attendees screamed and jumped in excitement. Wyatt and Fletcher brought the energy that we all needed mid-day. Despite a short and unfortunate weather delay, Santigold delivered a stunning performance, leading into a beautiful finale with Death Cab for Cutie and a seamless transition to The Postal Service, leaving fans in awe of the musical journey.
The third and final day, which also happened to be Mother's Day, saw local talents Nicole Canaan, 26 fix, and Persona 749 leaving their mark on the crowds. Little Moon, a local band that is fresh from their NPR Tiny Desk Concert success, delivered a mesmerizing set, while Model/Actriz and Pond engaged with the audience in dynamic ways, ensuring every moment was memorable. Ginger Root's special screening of his new anime movie trailer added an extra layer of excitement to the festivities. The festival culminated in a fiery performance by LCD Soundsystem, leaving attendees already anticipating next year's installment.
For those who have yet to experience the magic of the Kilby Block Party Festival, next year is a must. With its blend of great music and even better people, the festival creates an environment where everyone feels welcome and embraced. Whether it be everyone’s cool outfits or it’s the staff and security being surprisingly sweet, this festival is different than the rest. From the diverse lineup to the friendly atmosphere, Kilby Block Party is an experience not to be missed.

Tom Walker Review

Article written and photos by Elodie Hadfield
This was my second time seeing Tom Walker perform and wow... his performances just get better and better.
Tom Walker lit up the stage at the sold-out O2 Academy in Leeds last night (29th April). Tom Walker rose to fame after the release of his hit single ‘Leave a Light On’ back in 2018, which kickstarted his successful career in music. The Leeds show was one of the fifteen shows that made up the I AM, UK tour. Walker’s vocal ability is incredible and it was a privilege to both review and photograph his Leeds show.
As the band came out and took their places on stage, the excitement coming from the crowd filled the sold-out venue, with people cheering and chanting for Tom. Tom kicked off his set with ‘Rapture’ and ‘Wait For You. The energy in the O2 Academy was incredible as the crowd belted out the words back at Tom, people’s hands up high, swaying and dancing to the music. Tom also played his latest single ‘Head Underwater’ which was definitely a crowd favorite.
Later in the set, Tom played one of my personal favorite songs “Just You and I” and it’s safe to say the crowd loved it just as much as I did. It was so beautiful to see a crowd unified by love and care. The whole of the O2 sang in unison and the atmosphere during the song was truly magical and definitely a moment to remember.
The most emotional moment of the evening was when Tom dedicated the song “Lifeline” to a friend of his he’d lost. Tom explained the difficulties he and his friends had gone through after losing their close friend, stating it was the most difficult year of his life. Tom talked about the importance of reaching out when you’re struggling and that he had teamed up with CALM Charity, a charity that focuses on helping and protecting those in need. During the whole song, the crowd was quiet, listening to the beautiful and emotionally powered lyrics.
After a beautiful set, Tom concluded the evening with arguably his most famous song “Leave a Light On” and the crowd absolutely loved every minute of it. The sound of the whole venue singing the lyrics was heart-warming and it was a very special and emotional moment, especially for me. You could just see how much the support of his fans meant and how much he loves sharing his music and sound with the world
Overall, Tom’s performance was truly phenomenal. It was such a privilege to watch Tom share his stories with his fans and the show was a pleasure to both photograph and review. I look forward to seeing where Tom Walker goes next in his music journey.
What's with all the Ruckus?

California post-hardcore band Movements took the Las Vegas House of Blues stage as they neared the end of their Ruckus! Tour; playing a total of twenty-two shows across the country, accompanied by Tigers Jaw, Paerish, and Spiritual Cramp.
The night began with Paerish opening up. The alternative rock band is originally from France and joined movements as they made their way through the States. They played multiple songs from their discography including Daydreaming and Houses of American Style. Their energy set in with the audience as the night progressively picked up as the rest of the bands completed their sets.
Spiritual Cramp a San Fransisco-based punk band took the stage after Paerish. Their music takes inspiration from the 70’s and late 80’s. Playing many songs from their discography including Talkin On The Internet and Better Off This Way their groovy beats got the crowd to move.
Tigers Jaw, the final opening band took the stage. PlayingPlane Vs. Tank Vs. Submarine, I Saw Water, and others. The audience grew louder as they began to sing along to some of their favorite songs before their set came to its finale.

The audience grew with anticipation and finally erupted when Movments took the stage. Opening up with Lead Pipe, and You’re One Of Us Now . The crowd grew rowdy as the pit opened up and multiple people began to crowd-surf their way through and to the front. No matter how old or young you were the people who made up the pit made sure it was not only fun but as safe as it possibly could be.
As the set progressed the band played some of their older songs including Skin To Skin and Cherry Thrill, an exciting moment for newer and older fans alike. The show came to a close with one of their most popular songs, Daylily. The crowd all sang in unison after sharing such an unforgettable night together.
Over the years Movments has really made a name for themselves within the music scene and it is clear that they will continue to do so. For those who were not able to snag tickets during their Ruckus! Tour, they have multiple festivals they will be playing at throughout the year as well, and if you find yourself able to catch them it is undeniably worth your time.

Dylan puts on an intimate show in Detroit

Dylan an up-and-coming British pop-rock icon! Known for her biggest song “No Romeo” has traveled the world on her Rebel Child tour acquiring quite the bit of fans due to her incredible ability to captivate audiences with a stage presence not typically found in such new artists. After dropping the No Romeo EP in 2022 and coming off of opening for Gayle and Ed Sheeran in 2023 on their respective tours. With an album on the horizon, Dylan gears up for an unforgettable tour.
Mercer Henderson an artist local to the States hailing from New York City prepared the way for Dylan in Detroit with style, finesse, and charm that instantly connected her with concertgoers. Playing with her was her longtime bandmate Sam Cronin artist in their own regard both currently in school at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute. while Mercer Henderson is cultivating her musical prowess and honing in on that IT factor, she obviously has released hit after hit and there’s a special future in store for this one.
Find Mercer Henderson at her individual links below:
My first thoughts about Dylan’s entrance was the theatrics building up to her gracing the stage were so well executed and if anything was foreshadowing what was to come this was it. She came to the stage and instantly started the party off shredding with “Rebel Child”.Throughout the night the audience at El club a small venue right in Southwest Detroit was exploding with energy which led the British icon to be deemed as “small but mighty”. This factor of the night led to it being quite the intimate showcase with hilarious conversations happening back and forth between the artist and fans that don’t typically happen at shows of larger capacity. With her debut album on the way, we got a taste of what was coming with a very dancey disco unreleased track on the album “Perfect Revenge” reminiscent of the band 1975. From ripping on guitar to Taylor Swift/Sam Smith covers And capping off the night with a perfect track for the end of any concert “nothing lasts forever” Dylan turned this intimate crowd into a “small but mighty” party.
Julia Jacklin - In Residency at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Article written and photos by Natalie Ryan
Article written and photos by Natalie Ryan
On April 2nd, Australian singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin played the third in a series of four sold-out residency shows at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. The Masonic Lodge is an intimate venue at the famous star-studded historic cemetery with wonderful acoustics. Before Jacklin took the stage, fellow Aussie Georgia Maq graced the audience with her beautiful voice. Maq was previously lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of former Australian band Camp Cope, who were trailblazers in sexual assault awareness and prevention at concerts and festivals. Maq’s voice soared through the room and I’m sure that new fans were made by the way the small room filled up quickly.
Find Georgia Maq at her individual links below:
Once the crowd was nearly spilling out the doors, Julia Jacklin walked from the entrance and up onto the stage, grabbed her guitar, said hello, and began to sing her first song of the night. She played with no backing tracks and no band, her powerful yet gentle voice enough to silence the room. She started off with the namesake of her 2016 debut album “Don’t Let the Kids Win”, before going into a cover of “Shivers” by The Boys Next Door, which she released a studio version of last year. I don’t always like covers, but I would definitely recommend her version, it’s full of emotion while maintaining the integrity of the original. Later, during “Be Careful With Yourself”, she forgot the lyrics to a verse and the audience immediately chimed in, everyone laughing with each other. She took a lot of time in between songs to chat with us and tell stories of her experiences in the music industry, including one song that had been difficult to play in the past.
A fan reached out to her prior to the show asking if she would play “Motherland” from her debut album. She promised she would, but first, she told a humorous but painful story of how she used to get terrible stage fright early in her career and even had a panic attack once while she was playing that song at a show. It was hard for her to play it every time after that out of fear it would happen again. She admitted that she still prefers more intimate shows and smaller crowds (like this one) but she no longer has that gripping fear anymore. Finishing the song, she pumped her fists in a “yes!” gesture and the audience excitedly cheered and applauded her.
For her last song, she used a karaoke video of “Lydia Wears a Cross”, from her most recent album “PRE PLEASURE”, as a backing track, encouraging everyone to sing along with her. After the merch line was practically out the door, her stellar performance presumably affirmed that fans needed a special poster or shirt to commemorate the night. I was not very familiar with Jacklin before attending the show, but I am very glad I went. She is the kind of artist who sounds so good live, that you almost don’t want to sing along, even if you know all the words. If you’re a fan of Björk, Fiona Apple, boygenius, or anyone with a killer voice, you will love Julia Jacklin.

The Last Dinner Party shuts industry plant allegations up at their sold out show in Detroit
Article written and photos by Jordyn Ward
Article written and photos by Jordyn Ward
The Last Dinner Party is A British indie rock band started in 2021 with members Abigail Morris (vocals), Lizzie Mayland (vocals, guitar), Emily Roberts (lead guitar, mandolin, flute) Georgia Davies (bass), and Aurora Nishevci (keyboard, vocals) seemingly amassed a great following out of nowhere with their hit and debut song “nothing matters” in 2023 and ever since then it has been off to the moon with this all star group of rockstars from London, winning the rising star brit award in ‘23 and not long after winning the BBC sound of ‘24 poll. Shortly after that, they released their debut album “Prelude to Ecstasy” which charted number one on the UK albums chart vaulting this group into stardom and leading them into their near sold-out tour. With such great and some might say swift success it has led to bringing up the age-old question of is this an “industry plant or talent”.
As I went into this show I binged a ton of their music and really started to love this ABBA, Queen sound about this band and the overall aesthetic that they had going for them with the ethereal, regal, medieval setting they put themselves in with wardrobe and design for a lot of their art. And their sound was out of this world creating this very British punk rockstar vibe. With a sold-out show in Detroit topped with the success attained, I assumed this band had something very special about them and that assumption proved to be correct. From the moment they set up their entrance with the opening track “prelude to ecstasy” the crowd absolutely erupted and I could feel the energy in the room spike. Lead Vocalist Abigail Morris came onto the stage with the confidence and charisma of a young Freddie Mercury winning over the crowd instantly from the moment this band stepped out onto the stage and till they left, they captivated and did not cease to hold the audience's attention pulling them in closer.
The Last Dinner Party Showed love to fans, crew, and their opener Miss Grit who happened to be a local of the area and proclaimed this night to be her show. This band radiated the energy of people who absolutely loved what they do and worked so hard to get to where they were and that heart that they have toward this recently found stardom is why they are where they are. They have the talent, they have the look and they have the performance locked down. And leaving that room I made up my mind completely that no this is not a case of someone just put in the spotlight this is a group of extremely talented artists that grabbed the spotlight and will not be leaving it anytime soon. If you want to see it for yourself please do, you will not be disappointed.

Hello Dear
Hello Dear kicked off the most beautiful night to come. Blue lights immediately started trembling alongside the cheers of the crowd. Hello Dear was the perfect start to the night. Their sound is the perfect blend of post-punk edge and smooth jazz sophistication. There’s the coolest fusion of raw, driving rhythms with a touch of laid-back sultry key vibe. Their bassist, Jackson lays down the grooviest line throughout their whole set while the drummer, Joey keeps a tight, punchy beat. Owen throws in some jagged riffs that cut through the air, and Jesse fully takes over the keys with such rich tones. The vibes that Hello Dear brought just fully let you soak in the ambiance. We are still in complete awe of Hello Dear.

The Kilans
The Kilans took the floor immediately following Hello, Dear. They bring the most infectious energy into the room. Their set is fun, fast, and dancey. It is not easy to pull off their sound. The coolest mix between classic indie and surf rock. All their originals have deep lyrics that stick with you after the show. Jack has a voice that is so rich and full of soul which makes a Kilans show that much better. David rips on drums like we’ve never seen before. Jacob on guitar never fails to amaze the crowd. And the bass tone that Cooper brings is insane. The blend of these four playing together never fails to make a good live show. Beautiful music, beautiful energy, and beautiful people. The Kilans showed us that Fairyland really does exist.

Molotov Dress
Molotov Dress is the coolest post-disco, punk band around. There was such an electric buzz in the air as Molotov Dress started their set. It was so raw yet melodic with twists of punk. The bass in their set was so driving and kept the rawness of their set. The trumpet brought into their music was something we have never experienced, it scratched my brain in the most perfect way. Their performance was an intimate rebellion, a perfect blend of sensitivity and punk. Every chord gripped the crowd in a wave of unbridled passion. Molotov Dress showed us that seeing them live isn’t just music, it’s a full adrenaline-fueled experience that leaves you buzzing for days!
Find Molotov Dress at the links below:
Horrible Penny
Horrible Penny finished the night off in the best way possible. The mix between soft and harder punk completed the night beautifully. Vocalist Katana really knows how to get the crowd involved with their set. The crowd matched Katana’s energy with their own wild abandon. Some of the most powerful vocals we’ve heard in a long time. Horrible Penny accentuates the line of punk and performance insanely well. Through the chaos, there was such a sense of unity, a communal release of pent-up emotions, all set to raw, unapologetic punk.
Chelsea Cutler Lights Up Detroit

As I walked into The Fillmore Detroit I could feel a very distinct sense of love for this artist and a room of people that have watched her grow as an artist since her debut in 2015 and also newer fans introduced to her work by collaborations with artists such as Jeremy zucker and Noah kahan. Since then she has amassed quite a following of loyal fans and they were all ecstatic to witness their favorite artist Chelsea Cutler grace the stage.
Find Yoke Lore at their individual links below:
Up-and-coming indie folk duo Yoke Lore opened up the night with the most consistent high energy I’ve ever seen from a band of this size. Dawning only a banjo and a drum set these guys knew exactly how to make not only the most but the best out of the tools they were given. The crowd in Detroit seemed to be quite acquainted with these two also as they sang along and erupted in screams of joy when they heard the first note of “beige” seemingly a crowd and Chelsea cutler certified banger. Excited to see where these two get in their career with such a distinct and charming sound.
Then the lights go down and we hear a voicemail ring from the speakers and the stage lit up revealing what can be described as a stone wall designed with beautiful arches and a disco-like stage lining. From behind the arches Chelsea walked through with a guitar in hand and put on an unforgettable show playing various songs ranging from her debut album How to be Human all the way to her newest release Stellaria she started drinking a red bull a few songs in, so you can imagine the energy was through the roof the entire time. This is not an artist you’re going to want to miss while she’s out on tour, and if you’re not familiar with her work I highly urge you change that.

Kirby Takes on Kilby
Article written by Zero Mars
Article written by Zero Mars
On Sunday, February 25th, the Salt Lake City air was pleasant with a bite of winter chill, ushering eager concert-goers into the cozy enclosure of Kilby Court. The stage was blessed by an angelic trio of uniquely talented feminine vocalists, Cannibal Queen, Allegra Krieger, and Katy Kirby, working in tandem with their diverse sets to create an unforgettable show.
Local fans were thrilled to see Salt Lake City wonder Cannibal Queen set the scene for the evening, taking the Kilby Court stage for the second time this month. Cannibal Queen is the up-and-coming solo project of vocalist Aubrey Auclair, accompanied by an array of musicians from other local alternative projects. Together, they unite in the pursuit of a special, eclectic ambiance.
Cannibal Queen greeted the Court with a twinkly-yet-melancholy opening number, Kill Your Fate, immediately drawing the full attention of buzzing audience members. Auclair’s laments are often sweet but met with loud, grungy belts that perfectly illustrate the artist’s aesthetic- rigid and grotesque, with a plush vulnerability lingering close behind.
Overall, Cannibal Queen’s music toes the waters of harsh and mellow noise, stirring loud, rock-inspired drums with droney synths and acoustic strums. Any listener who devotes her music to the quiet contemplation it warrants will be graced with a delightfully emotional exploration of love and obligation. The set closed with a brilliant two-piece composition, Lonely, Cannibal Queen’s self-recorded debut single, followed by Hostage, their latest release.
Next on stage was Allegra Krieger, a New York-based indie rock artist accompanying Kirby on their tour. Krieger’s 30-minute acoustic set served as the perfect mid-way cleanser, granting listeners a segment of relaxation and contemplation before the headlining act. Her lyrics take on a meditative sway, encouraging listeners to “let go [of everything]... and let be [for serenity]”. Krieger also sung immense praise to fans of Katy Kirby attending the shows, gushing that she’s had “the best time playing for these audiences”. By the end of her closing number, a special love certainly hung in the air.
To finish off the night, Katy Kirby entered to a wide-eyed, eager crowd, fronted by a giddy mother and her teenage daughter. As the two clung tightly to each other beside center stage, Kirby lowered herself to her keyboard, softly plucking out the beginning notes to her performance. Audience members were quick to sing along to Redemption Arc, the soft, poetic opening to Katy Kirby’s newest album. Kirby appeared almost shocked by the crowd participation, half-laughing as she remarked, “my mom doesn’t even know the words to that one…she’s a great mom, but a terrible fan”. Her humorous quips continued throughout the evening, never failing to pull laughs or cheers between songs.
Guitarist Logan Chung was quick to realize that the stroke of midnight would mark one month since the release of Blue Raspberry, Katy Kirby’s sophomore album. Each audience member would surely agree that the angelic, inspiring compositions of the newly debuted tracks were the perfect way to celebrate such an occasion.
The cohesive, tight-knit nature of Kirby’s band was clear through the duration of their performance. Each facial expression and gesture illustrated how deeply enthralled they were in the live untangling of each musical disposition, and reveling in every second of it. The chemistry between jazzy bass and high-hat-focused drum lines possessed a trance-like effect on the crowd, prompting Kirby to eventually inquire, “..You know you guys can talk, right”? Sometimes these asides were a bit more humorous, though, like when drummer Austin Arnold halted the show to point out a bug that had landed on his snare.
During the second verse of her most popular track, Cool Dry Place, Katy Kirby pulled opener Cannibal Queen on stage to take over the mic. The local artist took a louder, more accentuated approach to the otherwise reverent song, allowing for the rawer emotions of the piece to peek through with a greater ferocity.
Kirby closed her set with a cover of the popular Mountain Goats track, No Children, an exciting nod to her upcoming tour opening for the obscure folk band this spring. As with all her covers, Kirby takes great care to create her own twinkly concoction, exceptionally separate from the original piece. Needless to say, with her recent signing to ANTI Records, as well as her uniquely exceptional recorded and live talent, opportunities are looking bright for Katy Kirby and her incredibly talented band. One can’t help but feel lucky to witness such a talent in a small, intimate space as the Kilby Court.

An Intimate EP Release Show

On February 21st, friends and fans squeezed into a small room with a slightly raised stage inside the bustling Chinese restaurant that is Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles, California. Outside the establishment, a screen printed 7” vinyl variant of Pile of Love’s new EP “Super Sometimes” (limited to 34) was being sold, along with other POL merch and friendship bracelets. “Super Sometimes”, released on December 22nd, 2023, is Pile of Love’s second EP, coming after their self-titled 2021 debut album and 2022 EP “Flake on the Future”. Los Angeles–based band Pile of Love consists of Morgan Foster (Mobin’s Child), Ryan Scott Graham (State Champs, Speak Low, Being Around), Kevin Geyer (The Story So Far, Same Side, Elder Brother), Nick Cogan (Drug Church, Militarie Gun), and Chris Villeneuve (Drug Church). Considering how busy everyone in the band is with their other projects, it’s notable that they’ve consistently put out music for the last three years. Personally, I really enjoy “Super Sometimes", along with their other work, and I wouldn’t object if this trend were to continue.
Before Pile of Love took the stage, local California bands Same Side and Object of Affection warmed up the crowd. Shoegaze alt-rock band Same Side was first, kicking off the night with music easy to listen to, while having poetic lyrics about the darker side of life. Object of Affection was even louder, nearly drowning out the soft vocals with high energy guitar and drums. Both groups were doing more than enough for the crowd to get into the music, having been fans previously or not. Everyone in the room was happy to be playing, listening, and being in the moment.
Find Same Side and Object of Affection at their individual links below:
After the two bands finished, Pile of Love came out with their song Happy to Hide, one of the four tracks on “Super Sometimes", displaying their power pop-rock strengths right out of the gate. Listening to their studio album and EPs, the vocals are gentle and easy, and the music is guitar forward with exciting riffs. I think it’s perfect music to drive to, like 90’s soft rock. Live, they like it loud. I wish I had remembered my earplugs! This didn’t negatively affect my experience, as I was just happy to be there. Between taking breaks from shooting I took time to enjoy my favorite songs of theirs, including Apart of You, which they played midway through.
At their core, Pile of Love is just a bunch of guys that love to make music and it’s crystal clear to see that love when they are playing. I caught so many moments of different members smiling at the crowd, each other, and to themselves, just enjoying their time so much. I watched Same Side and Object of Affection do the same, so POL was obviously in good company. Pile of Love finished out their set with Song 2, followed by Over & Out, which both have some of my favorite guitar playing, and are just really groovy songs to jam to. I hope to see Pile of Love continue to release music and play shows, and I’m really glad I got to go to this show. Check them out if they ever come to a city near you!

Enchanting Elyanna: A Mesmerizing Night at Her Michigan Concert

Palestinian-Chilean artist Elyanna stops in Detroit on February 13th on her nearly sold-out headline tour coming off of the release of her self-titled album “Elyanna 2”. The energy in The Majestic Theatre was so rich with community and culture which has a huge part to do with the kind of environment Elyanna can foster. Known for her Arabic-enriched Rnb and pop sound, the music played throughout the night transcended language barriers. This was evident in the multitude of monolingual concertgoers with the ability to connect and interact with the show she was putting on.
Preparation and creativity were abundant in the performance which displayed an excess of passion for the show's art. Full of little details that knitted the show to form a narrative that encompasses the depth of the culture she cares so deeply about. “ it’s not only a tour, it’s a movement, it’s a culture, it’s empowerment, it’s who we are” -Elyanna via Instagram. This sentiment was so clearly obvious in the presentation set in front of the audience. From dawning traditional Arabic garments that hold centuries of the story in them, the ringing of the traditional tablah echoing throughout the theatre, and the ululation from concertgoers expressing the extreme love and joy for this special night they were blessed with.
This is not a tour you’ll want to skip out on whether you’re an Arabic speaker or not this music speaks to everyone on a level that is understandable in a transcendental emotional experience that you will not want to miss.

On a late Thursday night in Greensboro, NC the venue known as Piedmont Hall would feel one of the most electrifying country shows of all time. Warren Zeiders has arrived for his “Pretty Little Poison” tour and was ready to shut the place down. The line was down the block and everyone was anticipating the show and couldn’t wait. Eventually the doors would open and as time ticked the show would soon be kicked off with the opener Clayton Mullen.
Clayton went right into the show going hit for hit with starting off with “Rainin’ in Dallas”. The riff from the guitar was all the crowd needed to hear to know what time it was. The ball would begin to get rolling right after that as he played “Whiskey On It”. This was all that was needed to get the crowd off their feet and get the mood set for the rest of the night that was soon to come.

The night is right, everyone had that good buzz flowing through their systems and it was time. The lights began to get dark and all you saw was a flashing white light with a drummer banging his heart out, a bassist playing the lowest of notes, and a guitarist playing a beautiful riff that let you know that someone is about to come to the stage and bring the house down and that’s exactly what Warren Zeiders did. The first song he came out to was “Ride the lightning” which was one of the best intros to a concert that many people should experience. The crowd going word for word singing the catchy hook of the song which gets stuck in your head very quickly.
Warren would keep the hot streak going as he preformed a cover of Lynard Skynard’s “Simple Man” which is a definite hype song for anyone who loves good nice crisp sound of true country vocals. This is something that had people in tears due to the presence of Warren and the song itself as its one many people can relate to as it tells you to just take your time and enjoy life and try not to stress so much and this show was definitely something that took the stress off of everyone that was there that night. The show would go on more as he followed up with some of his more popular songs as well such as “Pretty Little Poison”, “Burn It Down”, and “Pain killer”. The whole night was full of amusement and excitement and is something no one is ever going to forget. Warren Zeiders is someone everyone should add to their list to see before the tour ends.

Cutie Live from Kilby Court
Article written and photo by Keira Zoumadakis
Article written and photo by Keira Zoumadakis
The energy of the room fully took over as the band ran onto the stage with the crowd chanting “Cutie” repeatedly. Blue lights began trembling as guitars and drums amplified through the two-car garage. Rhythm guitar brought in the first sounds of the song Nothing To You, the first song Cutie has ever played at the infamous Kilby Court. The crowd began rocking immediately as the bass guitar and the kick drum took constant in this song.
Without delay, the band started playing their second song Tuesday. Insane bass heads straight for the crowd as Dylan’s vocals take over. Being able to see Cutie live in such an eclectic environment really shows what this band is about.
Next up came Dylan’s personal favorite, the band’s newest release Fine. Red lights flare as subtle sounds income- the epitome of bedroom pop just until the drums pick up and it starts turning into more surf rock vibes in an instant.
During a break in music frontman Dylan Squire begins introducing the rest of the band with Ethan Jones on guitar, Dane Heaps on bass, and Sean Coburn on drums. Followed by the introduction to a song called In My Dreams which is about daydreaming about a pretty girl who was at a concert.
Cutie’s whole brand is about having intense lyricism with dancey tracks behind vulnerability taking major inspiration from Boy Pablo. They have a heavy rhythm in their music that more people need to hear, especially live.
The second to final song Back In Time is one of my personal favorites. It is such a fun track to dance to or rot away to thinking about growing up whichever you prefer.
The crowd begs for more as Dylan announces their last song of the night Cutie. Pure awe in the crowd as the band jams till the final point. Heavy guitar, heavy bass, and heavy drums. To say Salt Lake City is for Cutie’s is an understatement to get them back out on stage NOW. Seriously.
Catch them back at Kilby Court on February 16th supporting The Hails!

Ashnikko Lights Leeds Ablaze

On Friday 8th December, Ashnikko took to the stage playing at the sold-out O2 Academy, Leeds. Ashnikko wowed the fully packed venue showcasing their incredible vocal range while playing a mixture of songs from their new album “Weedkiller” as well as some older tracks. With outstanding energy, dynamic dancing, and insane vocals, Ashnikko’s show in Leeds was truly one to remember!
While the crowd waited, the anticipation in the O2 Academy grew and grew. People were giggling in excitement, chatting about the fact they were really about to see Ashnikko live and discussing what song they were most looking forward to hearing. The lights went down and screams of excitement filled the O2 Academy as the dancers marched out onto the stage followed by Ashnikko, all ready to put on an exceptional performance. The first thing that struck me about Ashnikko was their incredible styling. Their blue hair contrasted with the utility-styled co-ord made for an incredible look! The staging and levels of dancing during the show were some of the best I have ever seen and Ashnikko’s stage presence during the show was impeccable
Ashnikko kicked off their set with ‘You Make Me Sick!”. The crowd was belting out all the words while Ashnikko and their dancers put on a fantastic opening number. Ashnikko is known for their alternative-pop sound and high-energy, dynamic performances. They rose to fame after their song “STUPID” gained popularity on the social media platform TikTok. Since then, Ashnikko’s career has gone from strength to strength, and with performances like their show in Leeds, I know Ashnikko is set to go far in the music industry!
As the set progressed, Ashnikko performed a range of hits. The one that stood out to me most was “Slumber Party” That song in particular is a personal favourite, so it was great to hear it live for the first time! It was a definite crowd favorite. The whole venue was singing and dancing to that one. The energy in the venue was amazing for the whole evening and Ashnikko and their dancers were absolutely feeding off the fan’s love for this show.
Finishing off their set, Ashnikko concluded the evening with “Daisy” which was another crowd favorite as well as another personal favorite of mine as well! The crowd was loving it, jumping and singing through the whole final song. Overall, Ashnikko’s Leeds show was truly phenomenal, the styling, set, and energy was unmatched. The show was also a privilege to photograph and review and I am looking forward to seeing what Ashnikko has lined up in the new year!

The Japanese House Travels To SLC
Article written by Gentry White
Article written by Gentry White and cover photo provided by Justin Higuchi
On Monday, November 27, 2023, Amber Bain, known professionally as The Japanese House, visited Salt Lake’s The Depot for the North American leg of her tour. Originally from Buckinghamshire in the United Kingdom, Bain burst onto the scene in 2015 when little was known about the artist. For a while, the androgynous quality of her voice and avoidance of press made people speculate about her music belonging to that of the lead singer of The 1975, Matty Healy, who was signed under the same label, Dirty Hit. The rumors were put to rest when Bain went on tour with Healy as the opening act for the 1975 in 2015. Her first EP Pools to Bathe In was released the same year.
Since 2015, The Japanese House has released multiple EPs and two studio albums. The first, Good At Falling, was released in 2019 to positive reviews. Her second album, In the End It Always Does, was released in June 2023 featuring credits from previous collaborators like Matty Healy, George Daniel, Justin Vernon, Muna, and more.
The Japanese House was preceded by 22-year-old folk artist and New Jersey native, Quinn Barnitt — otherwise known as quinnie. In February of this year, Barnitt released her first studio album flounder under Columbia Records, a division of Sony Music. Barnitt and her two bandmates (introduced as Jake and Hudson) took to the stage first with three acoustic guitars, interchanging throughout their performance with a steel guitar and autoharp.
The trio awed the crowd with smooth harmonies and creative lyrics like, “God is a girl with a sea shell in her palm,” or “What if I never scratched another itch for the rest of my life? // Would I die satisfied knowing it could always get better than this?” From somewhere in the crowd, a fan exclaimed, regarding Barnitt’s delicate and hypnotic voice, “She sounds like an elf or something!”
It is a fitting description for the slight country twang and sweet soprano of the lead singer’s voice, who captivated on stage as though she had been doing so her whole life. It is rare when an opening act can hold an audience’s full attention, but Barnitt and her band engaged from beginning to end, introducing those unfamiliar with her work to some lovely new songs to add to their playlists.

The Japanese House took the stage to enthusiastic applause and shouts of excitement for Bain. The five-person ensemble began with the third track from In the End It Always Does, “Sad to Breathe” and promptly followed with one of their most recently popular “Touching Yourself”. Bain’s deep, rich voice, previously thought to have possibly belonged to Healy, is unabashedly all her own. With her new album influenced by poetry, Joni Mitchell, and even Richard Linklater’s film “Boyhood,” Bain and her band filled the venue with the dream-like sounds of synthesizers and the emotionally honest lyricism Bain has become known for.
The crowd danced along to classics like “Follow My Girl” and “Maybe You’re the Reason” and stayed hushed with wrapt attention during softer numbers like “Chewing Cotton Wool”. All of the upbeat numbers with pop undertones were set aside during Bain’s first encore number, “One for sorrow, two for Joni Jones”, where Bain sat solo at the piano while a member of her company lightly lit the air with notes from the saxophone. This was followed by the hit, “Sunshine Baby” to close out the night, where Bain sings: “I miss my dog and I miss falling in love // I miss the feeling that you get when someone fits just like a glove”. From start to finish, the set was wonderfully inviting, where members of the crowd could sing, dance, and feel as Bain led her ensemble through a night of good tunes.
The Japanese House continues her tour of North America until her December 10 show in Boston, MA before returning to England. For more information and to view available tickets and locations, please visit the links below.
