ORA “Bad Day” Single Review
Written by Aiden Romrell
Alert !! Alert !!
New Indie-Pop duo ORA drops their debut single “Bad Day”!
I was instantly intrigued with this new sibling duo who are self-produced and stepping into the Nordic Indie-Pop scene. I love family bands as someone who is extremely close to their own family. Working together to create music is amazing and it reminds me of other family groups from Tegan and Sara to The Jonas Brothers and if you decide to count Billie Elish with Finneas I wouldn't blame you.
Something I really enjoy from ORA is their musical direction. Bad Day has a very simple message of not taking something like a bad day not letting it get to you. That you should remember your life is more than just the bad days you have. It’s very sweet. But I think its message hits even more with how the song directs itself and keeps your attention.
The sampling is simply gorgeous, I also love how the simple acoustic guitar eventually develops into an electric guitar. Though my favorite thing about this song are the vocals. Everything from the doubling and the harmonies to simply just how they are processed. ORA’s vocals sit perfectly on top of the instrumentals and I love how even when they use interesting tuning in their doubling it never distracts from the main attraction which I feel can be an easy hole to fall into.
I am also a sucker for harmonies, it's not a lot or distracting. But it's very tasteful if you know what I mean (very demure). I feel like I personally don’t get to listen to much masculine-feminine harmony mixing in my every day. So having something like this come around and knowing more is coming soon this year is an exciting prospect for me.
Personally, I would listen to this type of song when getting home from a long day at work. May help encourage me to remind me I am indeed more than my bad days at work.
Be warned though, this song clocking in at less than three minutes is extremely addicting. I have been looping it as I am writing this, but honestly haven't grown tired of it at all. It ebbs and flows in a way that is refreshing. Also, that outro just does something to the fuzzy part of my brain.
As a debut single, ORA have already presented themselves with lots of different aspects and talents. Their combined vocal and production talent has me really looking forward to what they will be bringing out next. I would like something a little longer personally but that's just me, can't get enough of a good thing. Even on a bad day.
