The Pixies

The Pixies, along with iconic indie band Modest Mouse and the enchanting Cat Power, graced Salt Lake City, Utah, with a night of musical brilliance this past September 3rd. The concert was held at one of my favorite local venues The Union, which always gives the opportunity for a community of all ages to come together to enjoy a legendary experience. While all ages were allowed, they still had the 21+ area ready for everyone looking for more of a rowdy time. The night was nothing short of something you’d read about in history books, as three truly unique acts from different eras, styles, and genres came together to create an unforgettable experience.
The evening kicked off with the sonic soundscapes of Cat Power, whose soulful and haunting vocals set the perfect tone for the night. She mesmerized the audience with her emotive songs, creating a sense of intimacy in the vast arena. Songs like The Greatest got the crowd dancing along as they waited in line at the merch table in the back. Her performance served as a beautiful prelude, preparing the crowd for the next part of the journey they were about to embark upon.
Modest Mouse took the stage next, and their performance was yet another masterclass in indie rock. Isaac Brock, being the only original member of the band, has worked hard to make sure their sound has carried throughout the years. The classic eclectic sound was still apparent live and the crowd loved it equally as much as the members did! With a mix of old and new hits, the band displayed their musical evolution over the years. The crowd roared with excitement as they played classics like Float On and Dashboard, while also introducing some fresh tracks that showcased their continued creativity. Modest Mouse's unique sound and charismatic stage presence left the audience itching for more.
Finally, the Pixies took the stage, and the energy in the venue reached its peak as the audience, younger and older alike, made the floor rumble as the icons stepped foot on the stage. Whether it was your first time or your 10th, their shows have the timeless effect of excitement. Lead singer, Black Francis, entered with big black shades on as he started the set with Cactus, welcoming the longtime fans with open arms as his stage presence took the audience by storm. Their music balances and plays with loud and quiet dynamics as they toy with more fast-paced tracks and slower, more somber tracks.
The band effortlessly blended their iconic hits from the past with their more recent material. Songs like Where Is My Mind? and Debaser had the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs, while newer tracks proved that the Pixies are as relevant and vital to the music scene as ever before. Their performance was a testament to their enduring influence on the world of alternative rock. Their set gave everyone something to chew on as they made sure to play as much as they could within their allotted time.
With the enchanting Cat Power setting the stage, Modest Mouse's indie rock mastery, and the Pixies' timeless musical presence, the concert was a diverse and captivating musical journey. It was a night where past and present collided, leaving the audience with a profound appreciation for not only the music bringing them together but also the bands giving us that opportunity. Salt Lake City was blessed with this memory and surely the audience will remember it for years to come
Make sure to catch a show at the end of their tour and keep up with them below!
