Alec Benjamin’s “Pick Me”

Written by Emilia Hansen

Singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin has released a new single and it’s everything we’ve been waiting for. Pick Me is part of a new EP that just dropped on all major music streaming platforms.

While the Phoenix born pop artist is known for his catchy melodies and musically diverse discography, there is one thing that makes him stand out: his lyrics. They’re clever, poetic and witty and this song is no exception. “Pick me if you need a guy within a hundred miles” he sings, “who likes tea, is a Gemini, has family in Ohio”. One of Benjamin’s signature writing techniques is referencing charmingly specific details about his life, adding a personal and quirky edge to his work.

When I first heard the name “Pick Me”, I thought the song might be about one of the dreaded “pick me” girls. It’s a phrase popularized by TikTok used to describe a girl who’s life sort of revolves around male validation. But this song isn’t a diss track to the popular kids, but rather a heartful longing for a certain person to reciprocate Benjamin's feelings.

Musically, this track starts out with a mellow electric guitar pattern with a slight beat as the verse starts. A layer of chill harmonies blends into the main vocal track as the pre-chorus starts. The chorus is mellow but punchy, with guitar and keys that are soft enough to highlight Benjamin's unique vocal tone.

Overall, Pick Me is a cute and catchy song perfect for all the hopeless romantics out there. I highly recommend checking out the rest of Alec Benjamin’s discography, including his recent singles Different Kind of Beautiful and I Sent My Therapist To Therapy as well.
